Beauty Ingredients To Avoid During Pregnancy
• Aluminum chloride hexahydrate and aluminum chlorohydrate – found in antiperspirant
• Benzoyl peroxide – powerful and efficacious for acne but with potential risks to the fetus
• Beta hydroxyl acids – salicyclic acid, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, trethocanic acid and tropic acid typically found in exfoliating products
• Botulinum toxin – Botox, Dysport or Xeomin botulinum toxin works by paralyzing the muscles around wrinkles
• BPA – used in plastics and can infiltrate into whatever is being contained by it; disrupts the endocrine system and have been linked to developmental issues and behavioral problems
• Chemical sunscreens – avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, oxtinoxate, menthyl anthranilate and oxtocrylene
• Diazolidinyl urea – ingredient found in mascaras releases formaldehyde
• Diethanolamine (DEA) – oleamide DEA, lauramide DEA and cocamide DEA found in hair and body products
• Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) – found in tanning products and harmful if inhaled

• Fragrance – parfum, perfume, linalool, limonene, eugenol, citroneliol, geraniol or cinnamal; fragrances are usually made up of other harmful chemicals like parabens, benzene derivatives, aldehydes and are linked to cancer and nervous system concerns
• Hydroquinone – idrochinone and quinol/1-4 dihydroxy benzene/1-4 hydroxy benzene found in skin-lightening agents, brightening serums and creams
• Parabens – propyl, butyl, isopropyl, isobutyl and methyl parabens found in foundations and styling gels; these chemicals affect the reproductive system and have been linked to breast cancer
• Phthalates – diethyl and dibutyl phthalates found in products with synthetic fragrances and nail polishes; these chemicals have been linked to liver, kidney, lung and reproductive issues
• Retinol – Vitamin A, retinoic acid, retinyl palmitate, retinaldehyde, adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene and isotetretinoin found in acne and anti-aging medications; showed increased risk of birth defects
• Sodium lauryl sulfate – foaming agent in soaps and shampoos; prolonged exposure can cause kidney, liver and nervous tissue concerns
• Thioglycolic acid – acetyl mercaptan, mercaptoacetate, mercaptoacetic acid and thiovanic acid used in hair-removal creams and hair coloring products
• Toluene – methylbenzene, toluol and antisal; found in nail polishes
